Thursday, Jan. 01, 2004 - 6:45 p.m. Happy Hangover Day!Guess who doesn’t have a hangover? Me! It sucks to be you. Before midnight, I was snug in bed with the lights off. I figured I’d sleep through it. Not able to fall asleep, I meditated for a good long time, until the explosions began. The bombing ceased after only half an hour, which was downright subdued compared to Independence [sic] Day. In terms of ordnance, Eugene got off easy compared to Baghdad, Kabul, Belgrade, Panama City, Khartoom, Hanoi, Cambodia, Tokyo, Dresden…the list goes on and on. The old snow had all but melted, and when I woke, what to my wondering eyes did appear but 10 centimeters of new snow! Just when I had grown to expect an Ireland-like climate, it suddenly turned into U2’s video for “New Year’s Day”. How about that? Fighter escorts for passenger jets, and armed guards on the planes…wow, I feel safer already. When Homeland [sic] Security [sic] interviews the suspected terrorists after they peaceably disembark from the aircraft, I suppose they’re asked pointed questions like, “why didn’t you blow anything up?” and “prove to us that you’re not dangerous.” Squirrel Life has posted a bunch of his old writing.
