Saturday, Jul. 26, 2003 - 2:15 a.m. Hulk Smash State!Anarchy Man and I went to see the Hulk movie, and we were both pleased as punch to see that the film expresses an uncompromising opposition to the State. The US military is clearly the enemy (and more abstractly, the will to dominate is critiqued through the Nick Nolte character.) The Hulk is the lone indominable (and abominable) individual who defies the State and wins. For the rest of us to see that kind of success, we have to work together and/or operate less conspicuously. The acting is superb, the writing is intelligent, and the only significant problem is that the Hulk doesn't look real, or move like he's real. Oh, and also that he defies physics by increasing in mass without assimilating any new material. His dad, on the other hand, does a Tetsuo and assimilates all kinds of stuff. Nick Nolte goes off on a splendid rant against government. I love the fact that so many Hollywood films (even "The Core") are based around the unchallenged presumption that the United States military will not hesitate to put the populace at risk to gain a potential new weapon. The film ends with the clearest possible depiction of the thuggery fundamental to all government: a guy waving a gun around making demands, trying deprive people in the grassroots of their self-sufficiency. But I expect no less from the director who brought us creepy teen sex in a Richard Nixon mask. Against Morality - Sunday, May. 01, 2005
